Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?

“Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?” – so begins a worship song by Delirious?

Whilst it would have been a very apt song (text at bottom of post)  for the Easter service I played at Tennskjær, it wasn’t what we were actually singing when the building shook violently three time during the service. It turned out not to be earthquakes, but rather snø ras (an ‘avalanche’ from the roof of the building – such a weight of snow that it shakes the ground and the building). Whilst it did no damage, people leaving the building later moved swiftly away, in case of further falls!

The snow which accumulates on roofs often moves slowly down, a bit like a glacier, ‘curling’ off, and preceded by icicles:

Sadly recently there has been a large scale avalanche on Senja which buried 3 men on a snow scooter. Concern over avalanche risk has also closed many roads and yesterday led to us cancelling the Barnekor (childrens’ choir) ‘spring tour’ to sing for a family service at Husøy Kappell. Not taking the children with us turned out to be wise: whilst there was no avalanche, it began to snow as we arrived on Husøy and enough fell during the service for our car struggle to get up the hill afterwards. We would not have wanted to be ‘stranded’ on the island with 20 children!

Pictures below were taken on the way to Husøy – there was about 5 inches (12cm) of snow on the road later.

Did you feel the mountains tremble
Did you hear the oceans roar
When the people rose to sing of
Jesus Christ the risen one

Did you feel the people tremble
Did you hear the singers roar
When the lost began to sing of
Jesus Christ, the saving one

And we can see that, God, You’re moving
A mighty river through the nations
When young and old return to Jesus
Fling wide, you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

Open up the doors and let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing
Songs that bring Your hope
Songs that bring Your joy
Dancers who dance upon injustice

Do you feel the darkness tremble
When all the saints join in one song
And all the streams flow as one river
To wash away our brokenness

And here we see that, God, You’re moving
A time of jubilee is coming
When young and old return to Jesus
Fling wide, you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

Open up the doors and let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing
Songs that bring Your hope
Songs that bring Your joy
Dancers who dance upon injustice

And here we see that, God, You’re moving
A time of jubilee is coming
When young and old return to Jesus
Fling wide, you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

Open up the doors and let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing
Songs that bring Your hope
Songs that bring Your joy
Dancers who dance upon injustice
